Respect Ballarat Community Survey
Roy Morgan is conducting an important survey on behalf of Respect Victoria. The survey is about Ballarat residents’ views around respect, relationships, and how people treat each other.
The survey is a part of a wider approach called Respect Ballarat, an initiative led by Respect Victoria in collaboration with the Ballarat community.
This is the first survey in a series of three to be conducted between 2026 and 2028. Each survey in the series asks similar questions, allowing Respect Victoria to track how community attitudes and behaviours change over time.
The survey asks about:
- Personal views and attitudes
- What people think others in Ballarat usually do or expect
- Short made-up scenarios about relationships, respect, and community behaviour
The survey does not ask about experiences of violence or harm.
When is the survey happening?
Roy Morgan interviewers will visit randomly selected households across Ballarat from early July to late August 2026. Individuals will be invited to complete an online survey privately at a time that suits them during this period.
How do I take part?
If your household is selected, a Roy Morgan interviewer will ask a few short questions to identify one eligible person aged 18 years or older. Interviewers follow a structured selection process, so you cannot volunteer if you are not selected. Interviewers will be easily identifiable by their Roy Morgan ID badge.
If you are selected and agree to take part, the interviewer will explain what is involved and collect your contact details so the survey link can be sent to your email or mobile number. If you can’t speak to the interviewer when they first visit, they can make an appointment to come back.
You’ll receive an invitation with a link to complete the survey online using your smart phone, tablet, or computer, at a time that suits you. You will also be invited to take part in two follow-up surveys in 2027 and 2028. Participation in each survey is completely voluntary. However participation is encouraged to ensure a representative cross section of the Ballarat community is included in the study.
You don’t need any particular knowledge or experience, simply answer based on your own views.
How long will it take?
The interviewer will only need a few minutes with you at the door. The online survey takes around 15 minutes to complete and can be completed in private, at a time that suits you within the survey window of July to August. Roy Morgan will send you reminders to ensure you are given every opportunity to participate and have your say.
Why have you chosen me?
Everyone aged 18 or over living in Ballarat is eligible to take part. However, instead of asking everyone, we select a smaller number of households at random from across Ballarat. When an interviewer visits a selected household, they follow a set process to randomly choose one adult to invite to take part.
This helps make sure that people from different parts of Ballarat are included and a wide range of views are represented. This also helps ensure the survey results accurately reflect the community overall.
What’s in it for me?
As a thank you for your time, you will be sent a $20 e-gift card after completing the online survey. If you choose to take part in the follow-up surveys throughout 2027 and 2028, you’ll receive a further $20 e-gift card for each survey. Gift cards are sent to your nominated email address and redeemable at a wide range of Australian retailers in-store and online. Interviewers do not carry these e-gift cards with them, they are distributed electronically.
What about my privacy?

Who do I ask if I have more questions?
